Coffee and Beer?
An Australian company has debuted a winter seasonal beer:  a coffee-infused, spicy, strong dark ale named Longshot.  The concoction is the result of a chat between the company's head brewer and a gourmet coffee roaster.  Coarsely ground coffee beans are cold-brewed, then added to the beer during fermentation.  The dark brew is then mashed with roasted malts so it is almost black in color.  Don't get us wrong:  We love our beer, and, as you know, we love our coffee.  But we prefer to enjoy them separately!

Coffee and Health
The good news about coffee just keeps pouring in!  Now it is the American College of Obstetricians and Gynocologists whose research review has found that moderate caffeine consumption during pregnancy does not increase the risks of miscarriage or premature birth.  As you may know, studies have had conflicting findings about the effect of caffeine on pregnancy complications.  Now pregnant women can still enjoy a cup of morning coffee without worry.

Research is also percolating to suggest that daily caffeine may help protect against Alzheimer's disease.  Researchers say that about 5 cups of regular coffee seems to protect the brain against this condition.  Researchers of course caution that Alzheimer's is a very complicated disease, and genes do impact one's risk.  But this is still good news about drinking coffee!

Lastly, because coffee is a rich source of antioxidants, it can combat the negative effect of oxidation.  Oxidative stress causes visible signs of aging, a decrease in the function of the immune system and some heart issues.  As we age, the body naturally decreases its own production of antioxidants.  Several studies from around the world show that coffee can help supplement the body with antioxidants.  While no single beverage can give us total protection and good health, coffee can be an excellent supplement to a proper diet.

More Coffee Trivia
  • Coffee represents about 75% of all caffeine consumed in the United States.
  • Raw coffee beans, soaked in water and spices, are chewed like candy in many parts of Africa.
  • Hawaii is the only state in the United States in which coffee is commercially grown.
  • Regular coffee drinkers have about 1/3 fewer asthma symptoms than non-coffee drinkers, per a Harvard research study of 20,000 people.  (OK, so this was one last drop of coffee and health news too!)
As always, Enjoy Better Coffee!
